The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Leadership is in a state of anxiety as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Bosiako wants the evacuation of traders at the Central Market to be halted.

Bernard Antwi Bosiako also known as Wontumi has called on the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to halt the phase 2 of the kejetia redevelopment exercise at the Central Market.

According to him, the city authority must ensure that, the Krofuom Market Project is completed to accommodate sections of the traders before it starts the phase 2 project at Central Market.

The first part, which involved the renovation of Kejetia business enclave, has already been completed with a total of 8,400 stores and other facilities.

The 248 million Euros project would be executed by Messrs Contracta Construction Limited, United Kingdom (UK). President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on 3rd May, 2019 cut sod for work to commence on the redevelopment of the Kumasi Central Market, the largest open space Market in West Africa.

At the ceremony, the President was assisted by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and British High Commissioner, Mr. Iain Walker.

It is expected to be completed within 48 months, and when constructed, would bring facilities at the market to standard in line with the government’s agenda to improve infrastructural development across the country.

President Akufo-Addo said the redeveloped market would have more than six thousand leasable commercial spaces, comprising 5,000 lockable stores, kiosks, restaurants and a waste treatment plant. Other facilities include police and fire stations, post office and recreational facilities.

But speaking on Ashh Fm’s ‘Boiling Point’ program last Friday, Chairman Wontumi says he will never allow the city authorities to evacuate the traders from Central Market until the final phase of the Krofuom market is completed to accommodate section of the traders.

‘’ I have information that the Finance Ministry has given clearance for the completion of the Krofuom market so the regional minister and mayor should see to it that they complete the Krofuom market before toughing other market, this is my position ‘’.
